LEEUWEN HOUSE

Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa

The site is located in the Bo-Kaap + is typical of a site in the area, which is narrow in width (8,8m wide). The regulations pertaining to the site allows the building to be built right up to its boundary line and therefore informed the initial shape of the floor plan. Some of the facades have been set-back by 1,5m to allow for window placements away from the boundary line. The roof height is related to the allowable heights in the area + taking into consideration the surrounding context. The shapes are driven by the plan + internal layouts. The design of this residential home is small in scale, which speaks to the scale of the surrounding buildings. Within the contained form the spaces flow seamlessly with penetrating voids that allow for natural light to enter through internal courtyards. The “boxes” overlap creating unexpected glimpses of the garden, sky + views surrounding the property which in turn creates a feeling of connectedness between the occupant + place.
